Automotive and Transportation

Important considerations for this sector

In the automotive sector, polymer compounds must balance mechanical strength, aesthetic quality, safety compliance, and processability. At PCL, we engineer our materials to meet or exceed OEM specifications in the following areas:

  • Mechanical Strength & Impact Resistance
Withstand road debris, vibration, and repeated mechanical stress without cracking or deforming.

  • Thermal Stability
Maintain structural and dimensional integrity under continuous operating temperatures of -40°C to +120°C, with short-term peaks up to 150°C in under-hood environments.

  • Chemical Resistance
Tolerate exposure to automotive fluids including fuels, lubricants, coolants, brake fluids, and cleaning agents without degradation.

  • UV & Weathering Resistance
Prevent colour fading, embrittlement, or loss of gloss over years of outdoor exposure.

  • Flame Retardancy (Where Required)
Meet FMVSS 302 or equivalent flammability standards for interior components.

  • Aesthetic & Surface Quality
Deliver consistent colour, gloss level, and texture, with minimal visible weld lines or flow marks in moulded parts.

  • Dimensional Stability
Low shrinkage and warpage for precise fitment in multi-part assemblies.

  • Lightweighting Potential
Enable weight reduction without compromising strength or safety performance, supporting fuel efficiency and EV range targets.

Critical Characteristics for this sector

Logo

Good impact resistance across a wide temperature range - Ensures safety and durability for exterior and interior parts, even in extreme winter or summer conditions.

Logo

High toughness and rigidity - Provides structural stability for components subject to vibration, load, and mechanical stress.

Logo

Excellent dimensional stability and surface finish - Enables precise assembly fitment and consistent aesthetic quality straight from the mould.

Logo

Chemical resistance to fuels, lubricants, and coolants - Protects parts from swelling, cracking, or loss of mechanical properties during service life.

Logo

UV and weathering performance dependent on material selection - ASA, PC/ASA, and other UV-stabilised blends recommended for exterior use to prevent fading and yellowing.
